1st Pet Veterinary Centers began small, as so many great things do, when Dr. Randy Spencer purchased American Pet Center in August 1989. After changing the name to Companion Care Animal Hospital in 1990, and eliminating the pet store that had been part of the original business, the veterinary business began to take off. As the specialty and emergency centers continued to grow, Dr. Spencer began to develop his vision of 24-hour veterinary care utilizing emergency, specialty, and primary care – all working together for the benefit of pets, clients, and referring veterinarians. His goal was to develop 24-hour hospitals that offered progressive veterinary medicine with an approachable, friendly, and warm family atmosphere. With that in mind, Dr. Spencer and several interested staff members developed 1st Emergency Pet Care in Mesa, opening their doors in January 2003. Within six months, 1st Emergency moved from weekend and overnight care to full 24-hour emergency care. In 2013, Dr. Spencer decided to combine the three hospitals into one brand – one name, all offering the same quality care and compassion, in the emergency, specialty, and primary care services that pet owners had come to appreciate. 1st Pet Veterinary Centers was born. Today, Dr. Spencer and the dedicated team that makes up 1st Pet Veterinary Centers continues to offer sophisticated and compassionate veterinary care to pets and their families in the Phoenix metro area, as well as specialty referral services to primary care veterinarians.

A Slice of New York was created to bring a New York comfort food to the Bay Area. ASONY was co-founded by Kirk Vartan and Marguerite Lee. Today, ASONY is a pizza shop that is also focused on implementing structural and social change around worker co-operatives and employee ownership.
As a native of Manhattan, Kirk had pizza all the time. When he moved to San Jose to work at Cisco, he did not find anything that he felt honored what he grew up with. The original location was modeled after the typical pizza shop in NYC (small, counter seating), has lots of fun NY visuals that are from real NY icons, and is kept very clean.
There were three main goals in opening up the first location in 2006:
The Bay Area has been so supportive and gracious. ASONY has been able to expand its operation to Sunnyvale, opening their second location on January 1, 2011. Expanding the vision, the Sunnyvale location is much larger than the original San Jose shop. It has tons of parking, lots of seating, beer and craft sodas on tap, can accommodate parties, and supports corporate catered lunches.
Both shops are easily accessed via main arteries. San Jose/Santa Clara is serviced by Stevens Creek next to the Stevens Creek Surplus store (near Santana Row and Valley Fair) and Sunnyvale is on El Camino Real (off hwy-85, near 101 and 237) in the BevMo Plaza. Both shops serve by the slice or whole pies, along with other items like strombolis, calzones, garlic knots, meatball parm sub, chicken parm hero, cannoli, tiramisu, NY Cheesecake, and even Drakes (Devil Dogs, Ring Ding, Yodels, Funny Bones, and Coffee Cake)! They also offer a 10" personal gluten-free crust (Venice Bakery in Venice, CA makes this) and a vegan cheese (from Daiya Foods). All food is made to order and everything is made in house from scratch.
On July, 1, 2017, A Slice of New York became the first brick-and-mortar worker cooperative in the South Bay, making employee ownership a reality in Silicon Valley. As of May 2022, there are 15 equal owners in the co-op, including Marguerite and Kirk.

The architectural designs that Birdseye produces perfectly balance innovation and tradition. They are renowned for creating modern, yet timeless, architectural designs that both complement and contrast their surroundings.
In late 2019, the American Institute of Architects Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) presented Birdseye with awards for two of their designs: Vista House and Bank Barn, for which the principal architect Brain Mac said, “We’re truly honored to be recognized for both of these projects.”
Vista House, the Merit award recipient, is a mountaintop home in Vermont. When presented with the award, AIAVT mentioned that “the design carefully responds to views and solar orientation to offer a thoughtful composition. Rigor and restraint are exercised in the design of the entire project. Beautifully crafted.”
Birdseye’s design for Bank Barn, a home in Woodstock, VT, won the Honor award. The home is three stories tall and inspired by traditional bank barns, which are built into hills so that they can be entered from either the base or the top of a hill. "Utilizing the sloping topography, the support spaces and garage entrance are concealed below grade to create an extended plinth for the floor above,” Birdseye says in their design description.
Birdseye was also featured in the New York Times article How to Build a Modern Barn by Tim McKeough for their execution of Bank Barn. The design concept came from a Lego model that their client provided them. Birdseye took that Lego model and transformed it into the award-winning architectural design that their clients are now happily settled into.
“We were trying to give it more of a regional feel, in terms of how barns relate to the landscapes of Vermont,” Mr. Mac said.
When presented with the Honor Award, Jeff McBride, project architect at Birdseye said, “We’re proud of this project. Bank Barn was a real team effort, from our clients to our consultants to the builders at Birdseye, everyone helped make the project a success and we are happy to see the attention it has received.”

Breakside started out in 2010 as a small corner pub with a basement brewery in Northeast Portland. The origin story begins with founder Scott Lawrence visiting, falling in love with, and moving to Oregon. After Scott met Ben Edmunds, an aspiring young brewer who became Breakside’s first brewer and remains the only brewmaster, the two founded Breakside with the simple goal of “creating a place where you could have a great time eating and drinking with friends.”
Breakside proudly upholds this ethos in everything they do, recognizing its team of brewers, servers, cooks, accountants, designers, warehousemen, cellarpersons, bartenders, and salespeople as what gives their vision life. In 2019, as a natural extension of their already employee-centered culture, Breakside became one of only a handful of employee-owned breweries in the country.
Today, Breakside produces 30,000 barrels annually and operates three locations throughout the Portland area, each with its own distinct atmosphere. When in-person dining was temporarily banned in Oregon, the team was able to quickly shift gears to package beer that had originally been bound for its pubs' draft lines. Casey-Fogli began as H.E. Casey Company in 1906. Harold E. Casey started the company as a producer and seller of dry construction materials such as rock, sand, and gravel. Over the years, the company grew and evolved. Along with building and operating four concrete ready mix plants, a construction division was developed. During the 1960s, Pete Fogli worked for H.E. Casey Company as Vice President. During this time, the company decided to merge its ready-mix operations with another and retained the construction division, expanding in both size and scope. In 1972 Pete Fogli purchased H.E. Casey Company and changed the company name to Casey-Fogli Concrete Contractors. A vital member of the Casey-Fogli team was Controller, Vince Ippolito. Vince and Pete were a dynamic team that focused on substantial growth, customer service, and quality production. Upon Pete Fogli's passing in 1978, Vince Ippolito's leadership position transitioned to President. Casey Fogli's reputation as a premier concrete contractor throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area grew. Well-positioned in both the public and private markets, Casey Fogli performed Place and Finish, Package and Site Concrete work.
