State Purchasing Preference Initiative

Spp cover

State and local governments have many reasons to support employee-owned companies: they build broad-based wealth for working people, are more productive, and are less likely to cut jobs in recessions. By investing in great employee-owned companies, state and local governments can strengthen their economies and create good jobs.

Despite overwhelming evidence in support of employee-owned business, today not a single state or local government has a purchasing preference program to support employee-owned business. That is why Certified Employee-Owned is creating a State Purchasing Preferences Initiative to drive the creation of purchasing preferences at the state and local levels.

Benefits Everyone

Employee-owned companies help working people build wealth while increasing business performance. Transitioning to employee ownership gives entrepreneurs a way to access capital while strengthening their local economy. Expanding employee ownership benefits everyone.

Offers Legacy Plan

Creating State Purchasing Preferences for Employee-Owned Companies would give entrepreneurs who benefit from existing preferences (for example: women, people of color, and service-disabled veterans) a new avenue to access the value they have created while benefiting their employees by making them business owners.

Grows the Local Economy

Purchasing goods and services from employee-owned companies will strengthen local economies. Additional bidding opportunities will be good for employee-owners and good for the local economy!

Current Initiatives

In 2019, the State Purchasing Preferences Initiative is focusing on California and Texas. Success in either of these states would create a first-of-its-kind victory for the employee ownership community and would provide a playbook for future efforts at the state and local levels.
